Two NEISD teachers awarded $1,000 each
Middle School Teachers Jonathan Sellers of Nimitz and Marilu Ramey of Tejeda were each awarded $1,000 and recognized as outstanding educators by the San Antonio Math and Science Education Coalition (SAMSEC). As two of only 12 winners in San Antonio, Sellers earned the math award while Ramey earned the science award. Both teachers received surprise announcements on Thursday, Feb. 4, complete with balloons and gifts.
"North East is filled with truly talented educators," said Richard A. Middleton, Superintendent of Schools, who attended each surprise presentation. "Jonathan and Marilu are two innovative and creative teachers. I am thrilled their skills have been rewarded in such a way."
Jeff Goldhorn of the Education Service Center, Region 20, announced the awards to both Sellers and Ramey on behalf of SAMSEC. Each school’s principal participated in the announcement, as well as additional representatives from SAMSEC, H-E-B and NEISD administration.
"It felt great to see this group of community leaders taking time out of their day to hand deliver this award to my classroom," said Ramey. "I am so grateful for this amazing honor."
The award honors outstanding new mathematics and science public school educators—applicants must be within their first five years of teaching. Judges, comprised of business and community leaders and educators, looked for teachers who brought innovative and effective practices in the classroom, displayed passion and commitment to the teaching profession, and sought professional growth and development.
